    About the Discount Calculator

A discount calculator instantly finds the final sale price after applying a percentage discount, helping you determine whether a sale is actually a good deal — and how much you're saving in dollars and cents.

Retail sales pricing can be confusing: "50% off" sounds more impressive than "buy one get one free," but they're mathematically identical. This calculator handles all types of percentage discounts and helps you compare them clearly.

To calculate a discount in your head without a calculator: for 20% off, multiply the price by 0.8 (or take 10% twice and subtract). For 25% off, multiply by 0.75. For 30% off, multiply by 0.7. For 50% off, simply divide by 2. These are the mental shortcuts experienced shoppers use.

Watch out for these common discount traps: (1) "Up to 70% off" — most items may only be discounted 10–20%, with only a few items at 70%. (2) Inflated original prices — some retailers set artificially high "original" prices just to show a bigger discount. (3) Stacking discounts — a 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is NOT 30% off; it's 28% off. Each discount applies to the running total after the previous one. (4) Coupon codes at checkout — always search for coupon codes before purchasing online; they often stack with existing sale prices.

Price matching: Many major retailers (Target, Best Buy, Walmart) have price match policies. If a competitor is selling the same item for less, these stores will often match or beat the price. Combine this with current sale prices for maximum savings.

Sales tax is calculated on the discounted price, not the original price — so your tax savings also increase when you buy at a discount.

    Formula Used
    Sale Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100) | Savings = Original Price × (Discount% ÷ 100)

    For stacked discounts (e.g., 20% off then 10% off): multiply factors — $100 × 0.80 × 0.90 = $72 (28% total off, not 30%). Discounts are not additive when stacked.

    Example Calculations

    $89.99 item, 25% off

    Sale price: $67.49 · Save: $22.50

    $150 item, 30% off + extra 10% coupon

Sale price: $94.50 (37% total off, not 40%)

Find original price: $60 after 40% off

    Original was $100
