    About the Savings Calculator

A savings calculator helps you project how much a savings account, money market account, or certificate of deposit (CD) will grow over time based on your initial deposit, regular contributions, and interest rate.

The single most important thing you can do to grow savings faster is to use a High-Yield Savings Account (HYSA). As of 2025, top HYSAs offer 4.5–5.0% APY — compared to the national average savings account rate of just 0.46%. On a $10,000 balance held for 5 years, that difference amounts to over $2,000 in additional interest.

CDs (Certificates of Deposit) offer fixed rates that are often slightly higher than HYSAs, but lock your money for a set term (3 months to 5 years). Laddering CDs — spreading your money across different terms — gives you a balance of higher rates and regular access to funds as each CD matures.

Setting up automatic transfers from your checking account to savings on payday is the single most effective savings habit you can build. Automation removes the temptation to spend the money first. Even $50–$100 per paycheck adds up to $1,200–$2,400 per year.

When setting savings goals, think in terms of purpose: emergency fund (3–6 months of expenses, in an accessible HYSA), short-term goals like a home down payment or vacation (1–3 year timeline, HYSA or short-term CDs), and long-term goals beyond 5+ years (consider taxable investment accounts or I-Bonds for inflation protection).

The calculator shows the power of contribution rate. Doubling your monthly deposit often has a bigger impact on your final balance than finding a higher interest rate — especially over shorter time horizons where interest has less time to compound.

    Formula Used
    Future Value = P × (1 + r)^n + PMT × [((1 + r)^n − 1) / r]

Where P = initial deposit, r = periodic interest rate, n = number of periods, PMT = regular contribution amount.
